Helping elementary school students in South San Diego engage in hand-on learning about our local habitats through hiking and camping trips.
Stephen W Hawking II STEAM Charter School is a public school in South San Diego currently serving grades K-6. We offer a program of study in which science, math, the arts, and technology permeate nearly every aspect of the classroom. Our charter school combines interdisciplinary projects and hands-on teaching for rigorous approach to learning that directly links students with real-life challenges. This project will provide funding for outdoor activities, including hiking, camping and snorkeling trips, for students in grades 2 through 6. These trips will introduce the students to different types of natural environments, teach them about natural resource protection and conservation, and provide them with the skills and knowledge necessary to protect and enjoy the outdoors for the rest of their lives. We anticipate that our students will carry what they learn from these experiences with them as they themselves become community leaders and parents. We are seeking funding for a total of 10 hiking trips and 2 camping trips to destinations in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, the Laguna Mountains, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and Joshua Tree National Park.
