We need transportation funding to take our 50 K-8th grade students on multi-day epic backpacking adventures in Bandelier National Monument.
Roots and Wings Community School is a free public charter school in rural Northern New Mexico that specializes in outdoor experiential education. We have 50 students in Kindergarten to 8th grade (we will have six 4th graders this year) in three multi-grade classrooms. In addition to planning learning expeditions that integrate all of the academic subjects, our dedicated four-person teaching staff plans and leads outdoor trips that range from one to eight days in length. We are all certified Wilderness First Responders and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts who believe wholeheartedly in the transformative power of the outdoors.
We would like to take our students on a wilderness learning adventure to Bandelier National Monument. This would consist of a four-day backpacking trip for our 3rd-5th grade students, an eight-day backpacking trip for our 6th-8th grade students and a one-day immersive field experience for our Kindergarten-2nd graders, (they will also be doing a separate three-day trip at a ranch near our school). Buses are needed to support us in this endeavor and this would be an amazing opportunity for our students (86% of whom qualify for free and reduced lunch) to have a powerful life-changing adventure that they wouldn't be able to have otherwise.
