Please describe your project in more detail.

Discover Your Forest Citizen Science Academy is the only existing citizen science effort focused on Central Oregon’s High Desert. The program engages 2,000 4th grade students, including over 100 from Buckingham Elementary in vital data collection on our region’s native plants and animals. This data is then shared with our partners at the US Forest Service, National Parks and OSU Cascades to assist with conservation and management efforts.

Funds will be used to purchase equipment for both bat and pika monitoring projects at Newberry National Volcanic Monument & Mt. Bachelor. We currently do not have adequate equipment to accommodate all of our 4th Graders. We will need acoustic, temperature and visual monitoring equipment to expand the program.

Students participating in the Citizen Science Academy benefit from a learning environment that applies real scientific methods and takes place in the field vs. in the classroom
