Please describe your project in more detail.

This project provides scholarships for the 4th grade June Creek students to attend Colorado National Monument. Support of this program allows each participant to receive a 75% percent fee for service scholarship to reduce program cost to $35 per participant. Scholarships are critical to ensure that all interested youth are able to join their classmates for the experience, regardless of financial constraints.

During Monument trips, students study geology and natural history in a hands-on setting. Students spend four days exploring the unique terrain of Colorado National Monument with their classmates and SOS guides. Throughout the week they experience rock climbing, go hiking and learn to maintain their campsite. They also discuss and practice SOS's core values of courage, discipline, integrity, wisdom, compassion and humility. The students themselves best demonstrate the impact this trip has on their lives.

One student told his guide, "My favorite thing about the rock climbing is that it's a new challenge. It made me push myself." Another student said "I learned that fear is another reason to try again."
